Seville, a hub for sport events

Rowing at Guadalquivir river in Seville by the Torre del Oro

11/02/2020

The city of Seville is known for its exceptional beauty, for its majestic Cathedral, Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies, all of them part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Also for its beautiful neighbourhoods like Triana and Santa Cruz, for its major Easter celebrations and the friendly character of its people.

As we mentionned a few months ago, Andalusia is a sports destination. Seville, besides all these touristic appeals, is also an important sports hub. Nonetheless, Seville has been chosen to host the final of the Copa del Rey for the next four years. The matches will take place at the La Cartuja Stadium, that with a capacity of 60,000 seats is the 2nd biggest in Andalusia and the 5th in Spain. It was built on the grounds of the Seville Expo ’92, one of the most important events the city has ever held.

Endless options by the Guadalquivir River

The city is also a significant water sports hub, thanks to the Guadalquivir River. It is possible to practice rowing, canoeing, kayaking and all sorts of team building activities that involve water, such as paddle surf, wakeboard and water polo. For those who prefer to remain dry, a sunset cruise on the river or a drinks reception aboard a cruise can also be organised.

Seville has also won prestigious awards thanks to its extensive cycle lanes, with over 170 kilometres. It has been chosen as the safest and best-designed cycle network in Spain and, in 2013  was the 4th best cycling city worldwide. Bikes can play an important role in your event, by organising a discovery tour of the city or also to help with transfers within the city centre, where cars and buses have restricted access.

Seville for runners

If you enjoy running marathons or simply go out for a run, Seville is also a fantastic option. Home of the Seville Marathon since 1985, it is the flattest marathon in Europe and gathers around 13,000 runners from all over the world. For those looking to take off the daily stress after a day of meetings, the banks of the Guadalquivir River are a great option – stretching over 5 kilometres and where you can admire some of the most notorious monuments of the city, such as the Torre del Oro, the Maestranza bull ring and the Triana neighbourhood.

The Maria Luisa Park is also a great option for runners or those who enjoy Nordic walking. You will get to discover fantastic spots, such as the Plaza de España, one of the highlights of Seville and setting of movies like Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

As you can see, organising a sports event or practising sport activities as part of your corporate or MICE event can also help you discover a new side of the city, and Seville is a great option for any kind of event, thanks to its rich cultural heritage, pleasant weather, delicious gastronomy and options to please all visitors.
