And the Goya goes to… ¡Malaga!
On Saturday, we hosted the Spanish Cinema Awards 2021 in Malaga. Named as the Goya Awards it is our own version of the Oscars. We celebrate a ceremony to reward our best actors, actresses and films, among other categories, and they are considered the most important prize for anyone in the Spanish film industry.
They were created to recognise our greatest creators, technicians or scriptwriters. Not only are they given to our national stars, but it is also open to anyone who has played a relevant role in any Spanish production. Nicole Kidman, Juliette Binoche, Vigo Mortensen or Salma Hayek are some of our international winners.
The Goya’s took place in Madrid until 2018 when the Spanish Film Academy decided that it was time to showcase other beautiful and film-related cities in Spain. To qualify for hosting this event, the cities must have a solid relationship with the film industry, preferably with movies and series both national and international.
Sevilla was the first city to hold the ceremony out of Madrid. The chosen venue was FIBES as it offers an auditorium that can host up to 3,200 guests, and it is just minutes away from the airport. The city of Seville itself, dressed up its most important monuments, such as the Golden Tower or the Old City Wall. Both of them, as well as the Alcazar and the Cathedral, could be part of your incentive, meeting or event in Seville.
In 2020 and 2021, these prestigious prizes have taken place in Malaga, another hotspot for national and international TV and film productions. Because of the current health and safety measures, the Award ceremony was run as a hybrid event, with all nominees seating at home, while all presenters were live in the auditorium.
Malaga is the cradle of many national and international artists from many fields. From Picasso -whose museum can be visited as part of your incentive or event, to Antonio Banderas, our most beloved, worldwide known actor of all times. He recently achieved a life goal by converting an old cinema into the Soho Caixabank Theatre, where the Goya Awards Ceremony were hosted this year. It is a modern cultural centre, where music, arts and plays convey creating memorable experiences that could be a part of your cultural program after your day full of meetings or a product presentation.
