Golf was brought to Andalusia by the British in the late 19th century, although the first golf course was only opened in Malaga in 1925, with the sponsorship of the British Royal family. Ever since, the sport grew so popular, we can now find 96 golf courses spread around Andalusia, with a vast majority found in the Costa del Sol area (Malaga, Marbella, Estepona). This area has the highest density of golf courses in Europe, and for this reason it is also known as the Costa del Golf.
