Cadiz: History, Culture & Traditions
Cadiz is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Western Europe and one of the most important ports in Europe. It is located on a narrow stretch of land by the Atlantic ocean, almost fully surrounded by water.
The city, yet small, is an interesting place both culturally and architectonically, thanks to all the civilisations that have populated Cadiz through its history. Phoenician and Roman remains can still be found by walking around its Old Town, where the main monuments are the Cathedral and the Teatro Manuel de Falla.
Cadiz is mostly known for its Carnival celebrations, that have taken place since the 16th century. Also, it is the birthplace of the first constitution of Spain in 1812 – one of the earliest constitutions worldwide. Its urban beaches rank amongst the best in Spain, notably the Playa de la Victoria and Playa de la Caleta, located at the city centre.
