The history of the Alhambra
Its location, atop one of the hills that surround the city, was not coincidental. Back in Roman times, there was an emplacement on the hill, and through history, different buildings stood on that location, including a fortress. It was not until 1238, when the emirate of Granada, ruled by the Nasrid dynasty, that the Alhambra we know now started its construction. Over the next one hundred years, different palaces, courtyards and gardens were built. It was in 1581, when the church of Santa María de la Alhambra was built – already under Christian rule.
The Alhambra is divided into four parts – The Alcazaba, the Nasrid Palaces, the Generalife and the Partal. Some of the most breathtaking sites within the Alhambra complex include the Court of the Myrtles, the Court of the Lions, the Patio de la Acequia, and the Generalife gardens.
