It is no secret that Andalusia is a land of beauty and contrast – from deserts to mountain ranges, endless beaches, subtropical plantations and World Heritage cities and towns. We are sure you remember Lawrence of Arabia or Star Wars II: The attack of the clones, right? They both used Seville‘s magnificent Plaza de España, the first as the British Headquarters and as Naboo for the latter. The city was also a set for Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven but the sites chosen were Pilatos House, one of the Palace Houses of the city and the Alcazar, the oldest Royal Palace still in use in Europe. The Game of Thrones fans will also recognise Seville’s Alcazar as Dorne, mainly in the 5th season.
Granada was also used as a set for Doctor Zhivago, who was almost solely filmed in Spain. Sierra Nevada can be seen at the background during the funeral of Yuri Zhivago’s mother. Another blockbuster filmed near Granada was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with the Brody’s capture at İskenderun train station being filmed at Guadix.
Almeria was also used as a set for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, both the Tabernas Desert and the Cabo de Gata National Park. The desert has been set for more than 300 films, mainly westerns, but also Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra, Conan the Barbarian, Exodus and TV series such as Doctor Who, Black Mirror and Game of Thrones.
As you can see, Andalusia has inspired many artists over the years, for books, TV shows or films. Its variety of landscapes, monuments and the beauty of its nature are some of the wonders of our beautiful region.
